The development of battery capacity lags significantly behind the trends of miniaturization of wearable electronics. Most modern Bluetooth headphones are either bulky or work no more than 2-3 hours without recharging. For some, this is enough, but for others we have created in-ear monitors that do not burden users between active use sessions, but rather contribute to the constant monitoring of signals from your device.

Initially, our earphones were designed for the smart necklace, because location of wires over the ears with the occipital nod and connection to the device on the back provide the most comfortable wearing experience and use with neck-worn device. However, we developed prototypes as standalone product and soon will offer the market models with a standard 3,5 mm connector for wide use with any other device.

We expect that basic model will cost about US$50, and technically more advanced models would cost up to US$300.

We have developed a special design of a two-frame eyewear, the outer part of which can be uplifted parallel to the forehead by a four-lever mechanism, temporarily removing from field of view the pair of lenses/monitors located on it. It is also possible to half-lift them above the horizon of view, but leaving in sight of raised pupils (it will be convenient, for example, for navigation to drivers or tourists,..). At the same time a pair of dioptric or protective lenses can also be placed on the base frame of smart glasses.

Let’s be honest – we don’t know yet. To create this product, we need a partner for electronic elements that we are actively looking for. Negotiations are underway, but it is still impossible to name the launch date.

We are witnessing the birth of a new market – the market of wearable electronics, which is already estimated by experts at hundreds billions dollars. Today a huge number of bracelets, rings, helmets, medallions, headphones, watches, sensors and other gadgets complements tablets and smartphones that are firmly established in our everyday life. There is no doubt that usual computers will change significantly in the very near future: we live in a period of phase transition of electronics from “portable” to “wearable” on the human body. In 2012, NeckTec analyzed the mobility trends of electronic devices and identified the most likely form-factor of tomorrow’s computers at the junction of technical requirements, anatomy, ergonomics and historical traditions. Thus the concept of an electronic necklace as ideal form of wearable computer was established (for men – hidden wearing under clothing). The design of the device and the choice of such location on the body allow to get a number of advantages over all known gadgets and ways of location on the body:

– advantageous location near main human senses organs allows you to realize all the basic functions of communicators within a single device, leaving your hands free;

– huge space (in the understanding of microelectronics) of blocks of the necklace, placed on the chest, allows you to accommodate powerful processor and additional electronic components;

– to accommodate in the necklace a powerful battery pack large in size, appropriate to the needs of the device and connected elements (e.g., lite AVR glasses);

– lightweight miniature earphones of our own design have clean and powerful sound, while they are almost invisible and not felt by user, and thanks to the overall architecture of the device, they are conveniently placed without hanging wires, and easily removed in a special pocket of the necklace;

– lightweight augmented/virtual reality glasses with a convenient connection port on the back of the neck become much more elegant due to transfer of batteries and processing power in the necklace itself, thereby performing only the function of the screen, which also radically reduces their cost;

– external screen with keyboard for information input/output becomes a cheap addition, breakage, theft or loss of which no longer have a significant value – your data always remain with you in the necklace;

– size of the necklace made it possible to implement a special topology of microphones (from 3 to 9), which formed a microphone array with highly effective noise cancellation and quality without necessity to bring microphones closer to mouth (you may request our Study of electroacoustic parameters, PDF file, 11 Mb);

– earphones wire winding and storage units eliminate tangling or damage to wires when using and storing the necklace;

– the ability to store significant amounts of information on the internal memory of the necklace will allow users to always have with them all necessary files or photo-video materials, the output of which through wireless communication would be possible on any external device;

– other advantages provided by the size and location of the necklace.

When actively using the necklace, we expect it to work for at least two days. In standby mode – at least a week.

We use all needed precautions to neutralize the harmful effects of mobile technology on users:

– the antenna module is carried from the user’s head to 30 cm (recommended – more than 2 cm);

– the limit value of SAR does not exceed 0.6 W/kg (adopted in the EU norm – 2 W/kg);

– for partial shielding of the antenna from the user’s body, a protective shield “wave guard” technology is used, absorbing significant part of the emission.

To prevent excessive heating of the necklace, the following design issues have been addressed:

– CPU and batteries are located in different modules;

– there is no power consuming applications, graphic module is not actively used;

– forced termination of unused apps embedded in software;

– to remove excessive heat from the inner side of the necklace we use temperature compensators, isolation pads, and coolers.

Battery capacity is growing very slowly over the years, and earphones and screens should be fed with energy, and the better they are – the more they consume.

Indeed batteries could be placed on the head or in earphones – but these elements would be heavy and ugly, users would need to charge every item separately and often.

As for the technology of implantation, it has not been worked out yet, and for the next 10-20 years its effectiveness is not obvious. When it comes to repair and device update issues, implant supporters try to avoid the topic.

Our brain perceives the world as it is served by our senses, so let’s just help them in the most ergonomic way.

Each user can configure the electronic necklace to meet his needs as we customize individual gadgets today.

For audiophiles – player with amplifier and multi-driver headphones, for athletes – use of numerous fitness sensors. For elderly people – as hearing aid, almost invisible when worn and outwardly indistinguishable from headphones worn by younger people, as well as possibility of constant electrocardiographic control in real time. For gamers – the ability to join the game at any time from anywhere. For tourists – navigator and translator, that are always with you. And many other applications that are now performed by separate devices.

We are still working on its creation, and cannot name the exact date yet. However, we are sure that as soon as we find a partner who can make electronic components better than we do, everything will turn out faster!
